Discovering Yourself

Dr. Rick MarshallOne of my favorite stories is about the child of a famous theologian who discovered himself. The learned professor tells about placing his preschool son in front of a large mirror. At first the boy did not recognize himself because he was too young. He didn’t know what a mirror was, but he did seem to enjoy seeing the figure in front of him on the glass wall. Then, all of a sudden one day the expression changed as he began to see the similarity between his motions and those of the boy in front of him. He seemed to be saying with delight, “That’s me!”

The Bible takes on fresh meaning, and especially the encounters of Christ with people, when we look and discover “That’s me! There I am. He’s talking about people just like me.” A whole new appreciation of the Bible can be ours if we can read it in the “first person.” The question of Christ to those who struggled with life, “Will you be made whole?” becomes our encounter with a living Christ.

So when was the last time you discovered yourself in the Bible?
