Sometimes hope is elusive, obscured by unexpected circumstances that shake our world and rattle our resolve. In those moments of high stress (sickness, job insecurity, financial woes, societal upheaval, loss of a loved one) the vice of living can squeeze so tightly, that we feel we cannot breathe. It is in the dark moments; we need to be reminded God is still in control. He is eternal and sees beyond the temporary difficulties and pains of life.
Many of the Psalms offer words of hope and assurance during difficult times. Psalm 46 seems to be one that I gravitate to these days, re-reading and meditating on its vivid images and resolute promises.
Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present
help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
The passage goes on to describe the all-powerful nature of our God. Nations and rulers may think they have the upper hand, but ultimately it is God who has the final word.
The passage ends by reminding us to take the time to reflect on this great, omnipotent being who cares about us individually and is with us, no matter the circumstance.
Psalm 46:11-12
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob
is our fortress.
This Sunday, the choir will sing this powerful text. Be reminded that God truly is our refuge, our strength, our help, and our hope! Praise be to God!!
