A solemn worship experience in many Christian churches is the Maundy Thursday service. It is held on the occasion of the last supper with the disciples on the night Jesus was betrayed.
Some have wondered where the term “Maundy” originated and what it has to do with this day? “Maundy” is a derivation of the Latin word for commandment. The Lord instructed His disciples as He shared with them on that night and Paul taught us that the church should celebrate the Lord’s Supper as a remembrance of the sacrifice of Christ for our sins and as a reminder that He is coming again.
On this night our church gathered in beautiful silence to reflect on what Christ has done for us and the meaning of this supper. All ages, from children who have received Christ as Savior to the most senior in age among us, and as singles, couples and families, together we came to a common table. I was so appreciative of our staff who served in pairs the bread and cup to each one who came reminding them of the body and the blood, the cup and the covenant. Each of us as ministers also took time to receive the meal as did the other participants.
If you were present I know you were blessed. If you could not come on this evening, I would ask that you take some time before Sunday to reflect on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper and the sacrifice of Christ for our sins.
Easter will take on fresh new meaning when we are more aware than ever before of the price that was paid for our forgiveness
